No matter your skill level, the journey of learning the saxophone is continuous and exciting. There will always be new songs, techniques, and styles to explore, making sax playing a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and creativity.

What is a sax?

The sax, short for saxophone, is a fascinating woodwind instrument made of brass with a cone-shaped tube and a single-reed mouthpiece akin to a clarinet's style. The saxophone uses an oscillating wood reed to create those mesmerizing sound waves.

The saxophone's vent holes, covered by keys with soft leather pads, ensure an airtight seal on the instrument tube. When the saxophone is at rest, some of these vent holes are left open, while others are closed off. A player skillfully uses their fingers to press the keys while their right thumb rests underneath the sax on a thumb rest, stabilizing the instrument. This precise control allows for expressive playing and endless musical possibilities.

Should I learn how to play the sax?

Like all musical instruments, mastering the saxophone is a matter of dedication and goals. Younger players may face unique challenges with their smaller hands and mouth, but don't let that stop your child. If you or your child have prior experience with wind instruments, like the clarinet, you'll find the sax easier to tackle.

Even if you’re a beginner, with proper guidance and regular practice, you'll be playing recognizable tunes sooner than you think. No matter your age or background, you can sign up for sax lessons in New York with Sage Music.

The role of sax in pop music

You won't believe how many popular songs over the years have featured the sax. From Carly Rae Jepsen's "Run Away With Me" in 2015 to Bruce Springsteen's epic sax solo in "Born to Run" by Clarence Clemons back in 1975, and even Lady Gaga's "The Edge of Glory" in 2011 — they all rocked the sax.

Even in the world of rap, Kendrick Lamar's third album had a track called "Alright" that incorporated the jazzy tones of a sax. It's amazing how this instrument has found its way into such diverse genres.
