Adult Saxophone Lessons

Believe it or not 63.8% of our students are adults

Whether you want to be a professional musician or have had lifelong dreams of playing music, you’ll find yourself in good company at Sage Music.

Our students range from absolute beginners to intermediate players to advanced professionals looking to improve their skills and practice.

No matter what you want to learn, we’ll get you there.

Advanced Saxophone Lessons

Our students have included cast members of Saturday Night Live, Broadway performers, and producers. We’ve even helped students prepare for graduate degree auditions.

We go above and beyond other programs by developing more advanced skills, practice habits, and learning techniques. You’ll learn more music, in a shorter amount of time, and with greater skill and security.

Intermediate Saxophone Lessons

As an advancing saxophonist, we’ve got the skills to get your saxophone playing to the next level. We’ve worked with beginners and pros, so we know exactly how to get you from one level to the next.

Saxophone Lessons for Beginners

Don’t want to play kids songs? No worry! We’ll work with you to help you play the music that you want. We personalize our lessons for you.

Sometimes we can jump right in with what you want, but other times it takes a little prep work. But we’ll always get you there.

In fact, most of our saxophone students are adult beginners. So you’ll find a welcoming environment with a team that knows how to work with folks just like you.

Other Saxophone Programs

Most of our students come to us after they have tried lessons somewhere else. They tried video courses or lessons that weren’t personlized for them – like YouTube or TakeLessons. They took lessons with teachers who were not trained professionals.

And they just didn’t see the results they wanted.

They didn’t get better or ended up frustrated. They paid for videos but still had to teach themselves. They took lessons with someone who showed them what to do, but not how to do it.

And that left them unhappy. Feeling like they wasted time and money. So they looked for a better program.

The good news is that you’ve just found the #1 science backed program, guaranteed to get you results. That’s the Arpeggio® lessons system, designed right here at Sage Music®.

Saxophone Lessons for Kids

Develop your child’s skills in a fun and engaging way

Just like you, we want to see your kid have fun, enjoy music, and grow into a capable, successful adult. And we also know you want a program you can trust because you are busy with so many things.

That’s what we’ve designed our Arpeggio® lesson system to do. Systems such as Suzuki, ABRSM, the Royal Conservatory simply provide a sequence of songs to play. But our system is designed to develop your child’s skills, enabling them to play any music they want. That’s real growth, and real learning.

Guaranteed results

In addition, our system provides you with detailed notes every week so you can stay in touch with your child’s development. Plus your child will have the opportunity to perform every week in our student sharing hour, in our open mics, or in our regular recitals. This gives you results that you and your child can see.

Music Match & Sharing Hour

Plus, your child can meet other students at Sage Music and practice or play music in our Music Match and Sharing Hour programs. Peer learning is an effective way for your child to grow, plus stay engaged while learning saxophone from home.

Music Match provides for a more focused one-one-one experience, while the Sharing Hour is about social learning experiences.

I'm a beginning, grey-haired, adult saxophone student who has been studying the past several months with Michael Conklin at the Sage Music School. I am surprised and thrilled with the progress I'm making learning to play my alto sax. I worried that it would take me forever to decode the dots and squiggles on a piece of sheet music. Well, thanks to Michael's guidance, teaching, and encouragement I'm not only reading music, but I'm also playing the correct notes on the saxophone! Currently we meet over Google Meet which has been so convenient the past many months. In each lesson I work with Michael on building my skills, understanding a bit about music theory as is applies to my lessons, and working on tunes or riffs that let me practice those new skills and learning. I don't feel at all pressured in my lessons. I see Michael as my saxophone learning consultant! Here's a good example of how Michael's teaching methodology works well for me: I sent him an audio clip of a George Coleman riff. I asked Michael if this was something that at my beginning level I could learn. During my lesson, Michael flawlessly played the riff. He then said, "Yes, Mark, you can play it. The riff is in the key of A, it starts with an E, but all of the notes in the riff are not in the key of A. So have at it and we'll review at your next lesson." And sure enough, over the next few days, I figured out the riff. It was such as feeling of accomplishment. And Michael set it up so that I could succeed! In all, I'm very happy with the Sage Music School, my teacher, and the school's administrative team.

I’m really happy that I found Sage Music and my AMAZING music instructor Michael Conklin! I recently decided to take the leap to learn the saxophone after playing the flute for about 20 years, and I was super nervous that my music skills wouldn’t cross over after taking a long break from music. But my music instructor, Michael, has made my return back to music, and on a new instrument so incredible. He has a great way of relating with his students, and helping them feel comfortable along the way, which has been really helpful for me as I’m learning the saxophone. We cover everything from breathing techniques to proper embouchure that will help provide a strong, solid sound on the saxophone. And he even connects things that I’m more familiar with as a flute player back to the saxophone which helps me grasp the saxophone material. And perhaps one of the things I deeply value about my lessons with Michael is the fact that he really listens to his students. He really tries to understand your interest in music, and the type of music that inspires you so that he can develop a lesson plan to help you reach that personal goal. So if you’re interested in music lessons, definitely check out Michael....he really is an awesome instructor!

I am so happy I found SAGE music. I am taking private Saxophone lessons at their Greenpoint and LIC locations with Michael Conklin. I am band student in the high level program at IS318. I had switched from percussion to Saxophone this past Fall. With Michael's help I was able to make dramatic progress in just 5 months and I am doing excellent amongst my very experienced saxophone classmates. Michael is fun, patient and serious at the same time. Sage is a very professional Music School. I highly recommend it! (Mason)

Types of Saxophone Lessons

While they are similar, the types of saxophone are all slightly different to play and are used for different music.  If you need help choosing the right kind of saxophone for your lessons, let us know. We’ll be happy to help.

Tenor Saxophone Lessons

The flexible, voice-like tone of the saxophone has made it a prominent jazz instrument since the birth of jazz. At Sage Music, our teachers are here to help you learn to fine tune and control the bright and penetrating sound the saxophone produces, whether you want to play jazz, classical, or popular music on the instrument.

Saxophone Lessons

Alto Saxophone Lessons

While not as popular at the tenor saxophone, many musicians choose the smaller alto saxophone. Sometimes they choose it for the higher pitches it can produce.

But more often, children start their saxophone lessons on the alto because of its smaller size. It makes it easier to reach the keys, and the smaller size is easier to hold.

Alto Saxophone Lessons

Private Saxophone Lessons

Sage Music offers private saxophone lessons with the finest and most dedicated instructors, committed to your growth as a musician, and as a person.

We look at almost every conceivable area of learning the saxophone and music, so you can learn to play quickly and easily.

For example, students will focus on tone production to play beautifully, the technique involved to play effortlessly, and how to practice so that you make the most of your practice time outside of your lessons.

Styles of saxophone you can play

Our goal is to give you the skills to play any music that you want. So in addition to the types of saxophone, you can try many different styles.  We won’t hold you to a particular style, so you get to be you! Let us know what styles of saxophone you want to play!

  • Classical
  • Rock
  • Folk
  • Pop
  • Jazz
  • Blues
  • Country
  • Gospel
  • Metal
  • Slide
  • Bluegrass
  • Flamenco
  • Compose your own music on saxophone
  • Or invent your own style

Jazz Saxophone Lessons

While the saxophone was invented for classical music, it has become much more popular in jazz. It’s hard to imagine much jazz without the sound of the sax.

But jazz requires many skills that classical music doesn’t. That’s why Sage Saxophone teachers are trained to teach you those skills. That includes playing by ear, improvisation, and jazz theory.
